Weather Alert: Downpours, T’Storms; Falling Temperatures Today

It’s a “Weather Alert” day, as an approaching strong cold front brings stormy weather to southern New England. Numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected through the late-afternoon.  Some storms could be severe with heavy downpours and potentially damaging wind gusts. The air will be warm and muggy the first half of the day, reaching the low 70s by noon… however, as the cold front pushes through, gusty winds shift to the northwest and temperatures rapidly drop through the 60s in the afternoon. Hour by Hour // A look at the next hours’ conditions »  About 1/2″ to 1.5″ of rain is expected with isolated higher amounts. The rain tapers off by late day with clearing before sunset. That sets us up for a chilly night, with lows dipping into the mid to upper 40s. It will be even colder on Friday night. HIGH SURF ADVISORY THURSDAY AND FRIDAY Hurricane Fiona is still expected to stay well offshore of the US East Coast, but swells from the distant storm will begin to reach the coast this afternoon. Large, battering waves and dangerous rip currents are expected, with wave heights as high as 5-9 feet later today through Friday evening. HURRICANE FIONA Ocean, Bay & Beach // A look at the conditions by the coast » Of course, we also have fall arriving this evening. The Autumnal Equinox occurs at 9:04 PM EDT. Right on schedule, the coolest air since mid/late May will be moving into southern New England tonight through Saturday morning, with highs only near 60 Friday afternoon. A gusty northwest wind will add to the chilly feel. By Saturday morning, some areas could dip to the upper 30s! WPRI 12 is looking for viewer opinions

WPRI 12 and its affiliated stations and websites are currently seeking Southern New Englanders to join an ongoing viewer feedback panel.

WPRI 12 has partnered with RAM (Research and Analysis of Media) in hopes of learning from viewers through brief online surveys in order to improve its content, offerings and advertising.

Whether you watch TV every day or just on occasion, the surveyors want to hear from as many people as possible.

Each time respondents answer a survey, they'll earn points that can be redeemed for Amazon gift cards. For example, earn 1,000 points to receive a $5 Amazon card, earn 1,500 points to receive a $10 Amazon card, and so on.
